В этот день 30 сентября 1906 года в Париже состоялись соревнования на Кубок, организованный американским газетным магнатом Джеймсом Гордоном Беннетом. В них приняло участие 16 аэростатов. Первым обладателем Кубка стал американец Фрэнк Лам.



Воздушные гонки вызвали огромный интерес у публики. Около 250 тысяч зрителей наблюдали за стартом аэростатов. Соревнования было решено сделать ежегодными. Главные правила Кубка не менялись с начала 20 века. Победителем становится пилот, преодолевший по воздуху наибольшее расстояние от точки старта. Страна, за которую выступает обладатель переходящего Кубка, становится организатором соревнований на следующий год.

Каждый раз пилоты ставили все новые и новые рекорды. Так, в 1908 году швейцарский аэростат продержался в воздухе 73 часа. Это достижение не было побито вплоть до 1995 года.
