Belovezhskaya Pushcha is the largest remnant of the relic primeval lowland forests that in ancient times was stretched across Europe. Today it is almost destroyed, more or less preserved only in the Bialowieza region (Belarus and Poland).
In 1976, Poland established a biosphere reserve "bia?owie?a", and in 1993 the Belarus biosphere reserve "the Belovezhskaya Pushcha".
